Dear guild members interested in contributing to the 80th Anniversary Book:
To all those who have chosen or plan to choose a sample for the anniversary book, we have set an important meeting to take place on September 14 from 10am til noon at Kirk House. You can enjoy your sack lunch and then join our regular guild meeting and 1st program of the year at 1pm (also at Kirk House) http://cowg.org/event/program-producing-and-buying-fiber-locally/.
In this meeting, we are going to regroup. Since we chose samples last spring, we’ve had great feedback and as a result, our format for the book has more clarity. The principal notion of the book is to honor members past with their samples so that in the book, we can feature 40 different members, their original samples, and then share the 40 new projects inspired by those samples. We’ve also taken the suggestion to divide our book by decades as the tool to frame our history, the trends/colors/weaves popular at the time, and to ensure that we feature members across the span of our history. That said, last spring, we didn’t present you with sample books based on weavers across time–we presented them with the focus only on samples. This means we have many samples chosen that were woven by the same person. So here’s what we’d like to do at this meeting:
We have every sample book now organized by decade and have listed the names of available members to be chosen from each book. We will ask people to look through the names and books so that we can have 40 different guild members chosen across time. We will have two photocopiers and the 80th book committee will photocopy your sample and drawdown so that you can take it with you immediately. This means that we’d like you to re-choose samples, an inconvenience for which we are terribly sorry! Of course, if you already have committed time and money to the sample you chose last spring, please continue but please bring the copy you received last spring to the meeting so we can make note of it and make another copy for our records. Although this is a restart, the committee is very excited about the format that has taken shape and about the history of the guild already emerging to us as we went through and organized the sample books. We feel this is going to be a unique production, one that will share our local fiber history as it was influenced by the larger fiber world, that will be of interest to many.
We still would like to set a goal of presenting your woven item at the guild Fashion Show in April 2014. Toward that end, we’re setting 3 support meetings during the next year with mini goals. Our 2nd meeting will be before the November 16 regular guild meeting at 11 am. The goal will be to have settled on a sample and project and the yarns you will use. If you can have a sample piece of fabric woven, that would be great. We’ll meet again early in 2014 with the goal of having actual fabric samples. The final goal for Round 1 will be to have your project ready for the April Fashion Show. Remember to plan for enough fabric to experiment, to make the project for the book, as well as 2 additional yards for sample sets that accompany the book. Those who weave and/or carry out significant duties for the book will be given a set of samples free with the purchase of the book (at guild cost). We then will have some sample sets to sell with books to the general public.
So we look forward to choosing samples at our first meeting on Sept. 14 and appreciate your patience as this project evolves. As is often the case with really good things, they take a bit of working and reworking to get them right.
