‘Sheep to Shawl’ demo–July 25 at the Ohio State Fair
COWG presents their second annual ‘sheep to shawl’ demonstration starting at 10 AM on Friday, July 25, at the Ohio State Fair in the arena of the Brown Sheep Barn at the same time that shearers begin the sheep-shearing competition. This year, Malabar Farm Guild joins in the fun too.
In the event, members of the guilds take sheared wool through carding, spinning, plying, and weaving in order to yield a finished woven shawl–all in one sitting. Watching the coordination and teamwork that goes into making a finished wool shawl really is artistry…and of course there is great gratification and cheers abound when the finished shawl comes off the loom.
In addition, COWG member Kim Johnson will demonstrate spinning on her great walking wheel–a different kind of wheel for those who haven’t seen one in action.
The whole event may take 2 to 3 hours — in case you can’t join us right at 10 am. There are bleachers to sit and watch but with shearers shearing, wheels whirling, and looms clicking, folks may want to walk around.
Check out the video from last year’s event and join us in person this year on July 25th!
